Behind the Scenes: Meet Marlene, Trainee at GameInfluencer

Meet Marlene

Meet Marlene, a professional esports-management student and a trainee. By joining GameInfluencer almost a year ago, Marlene has supported our team in an amazingly diverse range of projects and tasks: from campaign management to accounting and finance. Now she is also part of our G.IO team, reaching out to creators, onboarding them and serving as the main point of contact for support.

We’ve prepared an inspiring interview with her and are excited to share this story with you!

Can you share a little about your background and your career path?

I was born and raised near/in Berlin, which can now be seen as the capital of the German esports scene. My interest in gaming started when I was still quite young. I remember playing the first Sims games on my parents’ old computers in the basement for hours on end. After graduating from high school, I moved out and enrolled in university. It was only then that I was able to truly live out my passion for gaming. One of the first things I bought for my own apartment was a complete gaming setup.

Along with that, I started my studies in media science, gaining a deeper understanding of the history of different types of media, as well as their uses, for both good and bad. I also gained valuable insights into the esports industry and wrote a few term papers about it, highlighting its incredible potential and how it could and should be utilized.

After three years and an internship with a focus on social media, I earned my bachelor’s degree and began looking for jobs or internships in the gaming industry. By sheer coincidence, I found a university where I could study esports-management. Through that, I also stumbled upon a vacancy at GameInfluencer, where I applied and was accepted! I have been a working student for a year now, building a skillset to set foot in this industry.

What are your responsibilities at GameInfluencer?

My job is quite diverse and involves a range of tasks that are spread across different areas. Starting as a trainee, I was first introduced to campaign management, lending a hand whenever I can by helping the campaign team to reach out to influencers, as well as coordinating and managing campaigns. I have also been entrusted with parts of the accounting, overseeing the financial side of the company.

Additionally, I’ve jumped into the community side of things, reaching out to creators to bring them on board of our G.IO platform, assist with any questions they may have, and serve as the main point of contact for support.

What is the most exciting/interesting part of your work?

Definitely learning new things every day. I have been working at GameInfluencer for only a year now and have been able to gain so much knowledge about various things, which proved to be useful in more than one incident. I feel like there are really not many places where you can learn that many things in such a short period of time.

What is the most challenging part and how do you handle it?

That’s a hard question. I would say that for me, it’s time management. Being a full-time student while also working on the side is quite the challenge. I get thrown into the cold waters every now and then, because I have had to learn (and am still learning) a LOT of new things, due to GameInfluencer being my first job. Luckily, I know that I can always count on my colleagues for advice, guidance, and assistance, which helps me during stressful times.

What was your most favourite project you worked on at GameInfluencer?

I know that my colleagues have mentioned huge campaigns or projects that they have worked on, but for me, the answer is a bit different. It was a super small PUBG-mobile campaign, and what made it special for me was that it was the first campaign I worked on, doing and managing almost everything by myself. Seeing the final campaign in the video still makes me happy to this day.
